Where is it?
New Caledonia is an archipelago in the southwest Pacific Ocean located east of Australia, north of New Zealand, south of the Equator, and just west of Fiji and Vanuatu. It comprises of a main island, Grande Terre, the Loyalty Islands, and several smaller islands.
Surrounded by a stunning lagoon of different shades of blues and greens the island of New Caledonia is populated by inhabitants who know just how special their home is. Indeed such is the beauty of the lagoon that it has named a World Heritage site bringing people from all walks of life to work together on the island to protect what they have. This tropical paradise offers an exotic combination of French elegance alongside a warm Melanesian welcome. With plenty of options for getting on and off the island from Australia it is a perfect place to spend a few days exploring and relaxing.
What to see and do?
Despite its small size this beautiful tropical island offers a range of activities to suit all types of visitors.
If you are in the mood for relaxation you will find the beaches around the island to be peaceful havens. However if the sand is not your scene but you still want to be by the lapping waves of the sea you should check out the parades of cafes, bars and restaurants.
Perhaps you’ll be in the mood for something more challenging than a book by the beach. Some of the water-based options include sailing, kayaks, diving and underwater exploration. Whale watching is another option for visitors with the whales being a short boat trip away. If you prefer to be away from the sea air why not take in some fresh smelling clean air as you rock climb or even hire a microlight and take to the skies above New Caledonia.
