The foundations of The Savoy date back to 1263 when The Savoy Palace was built by Peter, Earl of Richmond. The property then changed hands over the centuries till it was eventually bought in 1880 by Richard D’Oyly Carte, who was a well-known theatrical impresario, composer and hotelier of his times. He restored the property and built the Savoy Theatre in its place. He later built the first luxury hotel in Britain, The Savoy, next to the Savoy Theatre, the construction of which took five years. It was the first hotel with electric light fittings and electric lifts and it became famous as the first hotel of its times to provide private baths in suites. In the early 19th century the hotel became synonymous with extravagant and exuberant parties and balls. The 1920s saw the installation of Art Deco décor and furniture, giving it a modern edge over its contemporary London rivals. A major refurbishment project was undertaken at The Savoy in 2010 wherein the original light fittings and the antique Edwardian interiors of the hotel were restored and reinstalled.
